Chiang Mai is popularly known as the Rose of the North. It is the economic,communications, cultural and tourism centre of Northern Thailand. Chiang Mai is about 700 kilometres from Bangkok, blessed with stunning natural beauty and unique indigenous cultural identity, and surrounded by high mountain ranges. The terrain is mainly jungles and mountains, parts of them are within national parks which are still fertile and verdant with plentiful flora and fauna. There are many sites and locations where tourists prefer to visit to study the lifestyle of the tribal people who live on high hills.

How to Get There

Car - Driving from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes around 9 hours, which you may pass several provinces such as Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Nakhon Sawan, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Lampang, Lamphun and Chiang Mai, depending on the Highway you choose.

Bus - The bus services of air-conditioned buses are available at Northern Bus Terminal. The level of comfort depends on the grading of your bus ticket. Some buses may provide snack, beverage, television and seat massage services. Enjoy your 10-hour journey.

Rail - The State Railways of Thailand operates daily services from Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong). Trains leave for Chiang Mai daily from 8.00am - 10.00pm.

Air - The fastest way from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is by airplane. It takes approximately one hour. There are daily flights operated by Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Air Asia etc.


Getting Around in Chiang Mai

Song Theao - The most common means of transportation in Chiang Mai. They are red-coloured and look like pick-up trucks. They pick up as many passenger as they can and drop them off at their destinations. The fares range from 20-30 Baht according to the distance.

Tuk-Tuk - It is popular for short and quick journeys. Fares must be bargained in advance.

Taxi - It is not easy to find taxi in Chiang Mai. The metered fare is charged according to the distance and duration with the starting rate 35 Baht.
