Phitsanulok is a major province of the Lower North. It is located where the Central Plains begin to rise into the Northern region, and is 377 kilometres away from the north of Bangkok. Phitsanulok is a city that rich in historical, cultural and natural attractions. The town of Phitsanulok, situated on the banks of the Nan River, has been a major community since ancient Khmer times and enjoyed great prosperity during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods. Unfortunately, most of the city was destroyed by a fire, and today it is built in the modern style.

How to Get There

Car - Driving from Bangkok to Phitsanulok takes around 5 to 6 hours, which you may pass several provinces such as Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Sing Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Wang Thong etc, depending on the Highway you choose. The whole journey is around 450 Kilometers.

Bus - Take the daily bus from the Bangkok Northern Bus Terminal Chatuchak (Kamphaeng Phet II Road) to Phitsanulok. The journey takes 6 to 7 hours.

Train - Train service is available from the Bangkok Railway Station (Hua Lamphong) to Phitsanulok everyday. The journey takes 6 to 7 hours according to the class of train. 

Air - The fastest way from Bangkok to Phitsanulok is by airplane. It takes approximately one hour. There are daily flights operated by Nok Air, Air Asia etc.


Getting Around in Phitsanulok

Tuk-Tuk - The most common means of transportation in Phitsanulok. It is popular for short and quick journeys. They are always around town and bus station. Fares charged depends on the bargaining.

Taxi - There are metered taxis in Phitsanulok, but they seldom use the meter, so fares should be bargained in advance.

Car/Motorcycle - It is easier to reach the destination you plan to go.

 

Special Event

There is Long Boat Races and Fair in October in Phitsanulok. These races and fair are held when the Nan River is full at the peak of the rainy season. The Fair is held in front of Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat. Robes are placed over the Phra Phuttha Chinnarat, and there are contests of boat processions and boat races.
