Phayao means “Long Mountain Village”, which is a small, peaceful province of mostly hills and valleys. It is also conveniently accessible by road from Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Phayao covers an area of 6,335 square kilometres and locates about 690 kilometres on the North of Bangkok.

How to Get There

Car - Driving from Bangkok to Phayao takes around 10 hours, which you may pass several provinces such as Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Sing Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Lampang etc, depending on the Highway you choose. The whole journey is around 754 Kilometers.

Bus - Take the daily bus from the Bangkok Northern Bus Terminal Chatuchak on Kamphaeng Phet II Road to Phayao. The journey takes 11.5 hours.

Air - There is no direct flight from Bangkok to Phayao. Travellers have to fly from Bangkok to Chiang Rai first, then take a bus from Chiang Rai Bus Terminal to Phayao for approximately 1.15 hours. There are daily flights to Chiang Rai operated by Bangkok Airways, Thai Smiles, Nok Air, Air Asia etc.


Getting Around in Phayao

Song Theaw/Tuk-Tuk - The local means of transportation in Phayao. It is popular for short and quick journeys. They are always around town. Fares charged depends on the bargaining.

Car/Motorcycle - The most suitable way to travel around in Phayao should be renting car or motorcycle. It is easier to reach the destination you plan to go.
